Location: Bristol, Cardiff, Liverpool, London, Nottingham or South Tyneside Office
Regular travel to our other offices may be required for collaboration with staff.
Please note that whilst this role is open to all Civil Servants, you can only apply for London office if you are a current LAA staff member based in those offices. This is due to and in line with the LAA's Location Strategy and the Cabinet Office's Places for Growth Strategy.

To meet legal requirements, if you are between the ages 16-18 and you are a successful candidate, you will be required to complete an apprenticeship after your initial on the job training.
The Legal Aid Agency
We are an executive agency of the Ministry of Justice (MoJ). We are responsible for operationally administering the legal aid fund to provide criminal and civil legal aid advice to people in England and Wales.

Contract Management & Assurance
Our core purpose is to ensure the delivery of accessible, high quality, value for money services to the client and contributing to the MOJ delivery of a modern Courts and Justice system. We do this through efficient management of the provider base and assurance activities that identify and mitigate risk.
Our Directorate is made up of:
Core Assurance and Risk Management, Counter Fraud & Intelligence, Corporate Assurance, Risk and Secretariat.
Core Assurance & Risk Management
The CARM team is responsible for identifying, assessing and reducing error on the part of the LAA, our providers and applicants. It does so by completing a programme of audits, independently verified by the National Audit Office, and by undertaking reviews of providers’ files on behalf of the wider business. It works together with stakeholders to reduce the risk of error, and to manage recoupments where error has occurred.
Job Summary
The Core Assurance & Risk Manager leads geographically dispersed teams responsible for measuring, understanding and reducing risk across the Legal Aid system.
This is a leadership role that combines people management, operational delivery and technical assurance expertise. You will lead teams of auditors and analysts, ensuring high-quality work is delivered to demanding deadlines while creating an inclusive, supportive environment where colleagues can perform at their best.
Working with senior leaders across the Legal Aid Agency and external stakeholders, you will build strong relationships, influence decision-making and provide constructive challenge to improve processes, reduce error and protect public funds.
Success in this role requires someone who can confidently balance people leadership with technical expertise, communicate complex issues clearly and maintain credibility when working with senior stakeholders on difficult or sensitive issues.
The work you lead directly helps ensure legal aid funding reaches those who need it most whilst maintaining public confidence in the stewardship of public money.

Working Arrangements & Further Information
The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity.
Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.
For nationally advertised roles: All successful candidates will be appointed to the nearest viable office nearest to their home postcode and on its respective pay scale. This will be at either a HQ building (subject to desk allocation, a Justice Collaboration Centre (JCC) or a Justice Satellite Office (JSO) – See Map. All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity).
For current MoJ employees, your base location will need to be changed to the nearest viable office (to your home postcode), either at a HQ building, JCC or JSO within the National Office Network and moved its location’s respective pay scale (any legacy arrangements/locations will need to be amended).
Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Flexible working hours
The Ministry of Justice offers a flexible working system in many offices. Standard full time working hours are 37 hours per week. MoJ welcomes part-time, flexible and job-sharing working patterns, where they meet the demands of the role and business needs. Annual leave is 25 days on appointment and will increase to 30 days after five years’ service.
