MOJ HR Casework are a team of HR professionals who support managers across a wide range of Government Departments and agencies, providing professional HR Case Management Advice.

As a HR Case Manager, you will provide professional HR advice and guidance to managers across a number of government departments, supporting complex employee relations and HR casework matters, focussing on gaining the best outcomes for both the organisation and the colleague. You will manage a portfolio of complex cases, acting as a trusted critical friend to ensure best practice, legal compliance and the earliest resolution. This is a broad, hands-on position within a dynamic and fast-paced environment, requiring the ability to manage a varied workload.

Key Responsibilities:

·        Managing a portfolio of complex HR cases where face to face (within your region) and remote/virtual intervention is required. Examples of a HR case include (but are not limited to) attendance, conduct, dispute resolution, Early Conciliation and Employment Tribunals.

·        Supporting managers nationally via the Manager Advice Line (MAL) and email.

·        Ensuring cases are managed in a timely manner and appropriate conclusions met, with a focus on early resolution. Adhering to employment law, policies, business and operational need.

·        Providing managers with advice and guidance which adheres to a range of policies included within the service offer.

·        Adopting a pragmatic approach in offering solutions to managers, while recognising legal and regulatory requirements.

·        Coaching managers in aspects of people management including communication, robust decision making, fairness and consistency and application

·        Demonstrating a strong customer service focus - building and maintaining excellent relationships with clients and customers.

·        Ensure all case management details are recorded accurately on the Case Management System and that cases are managed pro-actively and driven through to conclusion.

·        Pro-actively supporting a culture of continuous improvement and initiatives within HR, including supporting, managing, or leading projects.


Essential Criteria

  • Employee Relations or proven experience of managing HR cases and delivering sound HR advice.

·        Up to date knowledge of UK Employment Law and HR Best practice

  • Strong, current knowledge of UK employment law and HR policy, and the ability to apply it pragmatically rather than theoretically.
  • Credibility and gravitas - you can adapt your style seamlessly from frontline colleagues through to senior leaders and executives using both verbal and written communication styles to suit.

·        Maintain a professional and positive attitude, with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, articulating thoughts, and ideas in a composed manner to instil confidence in others

  • Ability to build high–trust relationships with stakeholders to achieve impactful business outcomes  
  • A calm, balanced approach, weighing legal, cultural and commercial factors

·        A strong advocate for data integrity and compliance, ensuing accurate and timely record-keeping of all employee relations matters.

  • An excellent level of organisational skills & working to deadlines.
  • Proactive and emotionally resilient.
  • Confident in working independently but skilled at collaboration to deliver results.
  • A good level of computer literacy including Microsoft applications: outlook, word, MSTeams and sharepoint.

Desirable Criteria

  • CIPD Level 5 or equivalent HR Qualification.
  • Experience of dealing with Trade Unions or working in a unionised environment. 
  • Experience of using a Case Management system.

MOJ HR Casework use Success Profiles, and will assess your behaviours, strengths and experience.

Working Arrangements & Further Information

The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity.

Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.

For nationally advertised role: all successful candidates will be appointed to the nearest viable office nearest to their home postcode and on its respective pay scale.  This will be at either a HQ building (subject to desk allocation, a Justice Collaboration Centre (JCC) or a Justice Satellite Office (JSO) – See Map. All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity). 

For current MoJ employees, your base location will need to be changed to the nearest viable office (to your home postcode), either at a HQ building, JCC or JSO within the National Office Network and moved its location’s respective pay scale (any legacy arrangements/locations will need to be amended).

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.

MoJ candidates who are on a specialist grade, will be able to retain their grade on lateral transfer.

All candidates who are currently in receipt of Mark Time / Pay Protection should ensure they are familiar with the new policy on permanent and temporary promotion which can be found on the employee intranet.

Flexible working hours

The Ministry of Justice offers a flexible working system in many offices. Standard full time working hours are 37 hours per week. MoJ welcomes part-time, flexible and job-sharing working patterns, where they meet the demands of the role and business needs. Annual Leave

Annual leave is 25 days on appointment and will increase to 30 days after five years’ service.
