Success Profiles

At the Ministry of Justice, we use the Civil Service Success Profile Framework to assess candidates at both application and interview stage.

This creates fairer and more inclusive method of recruitment by enabling us to assess the range of experiences, abilities, strengths, behaviours and technical/professional skills required for different roles.

We recommend visiting A guide to Civil Service Success Profiles | Civil Service Careers to find out as much as you can about Success Profiles. This will help you to understand the different aspects of the Success Profiles and how we assess them during our recruitment process.

Making Your Application

Every role here is unique, with its own set of exciting challenges and responsibilities. That’s why we look for a variety of skills, experiences, and sometimes specific qualifications for each position. Before you apply, take a moment to review what’s needed for the role and think about how your strengths and experiences match up. The more clearly you show us how you meet the requirements, the stronger your application will be! If you don’t provide enough evidence, we might not be able to move you forward in the process—so give yourself the best chance by highlighting everything that makes you a great fit.

Whether you’re asked to share your CV, write a personal statement, answer behavioural questions, complete psychometric assessments, or participate in interviews, we’re here to support you every step of the way. Ready to get started? Explore our helpful guidance for tips and insights to make your application stand out.

Sifting and Shortlisting

Your application will be assessed against the requirements set out in the job advert by the recruitment panel.

Applications that best meet the job requirements will continue to the next stage of the process.

Assessments and Interviews

If you’re shortlisted, you might be invited to take part in assessments such as:

  • Staff Engagement Exercise (SEE):A short presentation and Q&A with Ministry of Justice colleagues.
  • Individual Leadership Assessment (ILA):A few short assessments—typically up to three personality questionnaires and two aptitude tests.
  • Alternative Leadership Assessment (ALA):A 60-minute session with an occupational psychologist. Beforehand, you’ll need to complete two online psychometric assessments.

Further information on these can be found here

These assessments will not result in a pass or fail decision. Rather, they are designed to support the panel’s decision making and highlight areas for the panel to explore further at interview. You will find out more information about these assessments when the results of the sift are issued.

As part of the selection process, you’ll usually have an interview—either in person or online. This is a chance for us to get to know you, and for you to share how your experience and leadership style fit the role. Interviews typically last 45–60 minutes and may include questions about your past achievements, how you approach challenges, and your professional interests.

Before your interview, review the job description and reflect on examples that highlight your strengths and leadership approach. We look forward to a great conversation and learning how you can help shape the Ministry of Justice.
