Job description

An exciting secondment opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, experienced Probation Officer to work within the Youth Justice Service based in Coventry. This really is a unique role as it will enable the postholder to effectively apply key skills, whilst retaining a sharp focus on those who transition from Youth to Adult services, to help service users navigate this often-difficult period in their rehabilitation journey. The post will be ideally suited to someone who would like to expand their experience, knowledge and, expertise by managing cases within the Youth Justice Service. It requires someone who is flexible and well organised, committed to delivering the very best outcomes for service users of all ages.

We are looking for a Probation Officer who:

Is interested in working with young people, their families and, the victims of youth crime
Has an in-depth knowledge of Probation
Has experience of managing court orders in the community and in custody
Understands the differences of working with young people and working with adults 
Understands the advantages and challenges of multi-agency working
Has experience of completing assessments and writing reports
Has a flexible approach to work as it may be necessary to occasionally work in the evening
Understands the transition of young people from the Youth Justice Service to Probation
Can engage young people and their families


The role will require: 

Undertaking assessments of young people who are subject to Diversion, Out Of Court Disposals and Court imposed Orders (including custody) to understand the reasons they got into trouble. 
Working in partnership with the child, their parents/carers and other relevant professionals to devise and deliver a plan of intervention aimed at reducing their risk of becoming involved in offending behaviour again. 
Undertaking intervention work with young people, supporting them to complete reparation and offending behaviour programmes.
Acting as an appropriate adult for young people that have been arrested, ensuring that their rights are represented whilst in police custody. 
Undertaking work in court, providing high quality information that enables Judges and Magistrates to deal with young people in the most appropriate way.
Acting as the liaison between the Youth Justice Service and Probation, including leading on 18year olds who transfer across services
Role will be base at Coventry YOS Office

Working Arrangements & Further Information

The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.  

For nationally advertised roles, the successful candidate(s) will be appointed to a MoJ office location, which may include their nearest Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office. This will be discussed and agreed on the completion of pre-employment checks.

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.

Standard full time working hours are 37 hours per week excluding breaks which are unpaid. HMPPS welcomes part-time, flexible and job-sharing working patterns, where they meet the demands of the role and business needs. Annual Leave

Annual leave is 25 days on appointment and will increase to 30 days after five years’ service, plus public holidays. Leave for part-time and job share posts will be calculated on a pro-rata basis
