DevOps Engineer

Location: National

Interviews: w/c 9th June (TBC) 

Grade: G7 (MoJ candidates who are on a specialist grade will be able to retain this grade on lateral transfer) 

Salary: London: £61,201 - £69,338 (which may include an allowance of up to £1,899) National: £56,532 - £64,048 (which may include an allowance of up to £1,868)

The Role:

This role aligns against ‘DevOps engineer’ from the Government Digital and Data Framework. 

We’re recruiting for a DevOps Engineer here at Justice Digital, to join one of our dynamic and collaborative teams.

Key Responsibilities:

As a devops engineer, you will:

Technical:

  • Help build and run user-centred, open-source, secure web systems to serve a variety of citizen and government needs
  • Be involved in automating the deployment of systems that follow standard patterns, or components of systems that are more complex
  • Use infrastructure as code to assist the team in managing multiple environments
  • Build tools to automate tasks
  • Contribute ideas to the wider team and help grow our DevOps community.
  • Contribute to a diverse, inclusive culture across the development community, growing awareness, inclusivity, and balance

People:

  • Share knowledge of tools and techniques with the wider team and community, both developers and non-developers, and maintain DevOps culture.

  • Participate in the professional development of themselves and happy to try and assist others
  • Occasionally participate in 2nd line support during office hours, and sometimes out of hours (for which you’ll be paid an allowance and further hourly payment when on-call)

Person Specification

You will have:

  • A systematic approach to solving problems
  • Awareness of the use of containers and minimal operating systems
  • Experience of modern development and deployment techniques
  • Experience of infrastructure as code tooling such as Terraform
  • Experience working in a mixed skillset team
  • Experience of version control technologies such as Git
  • Experience of cloud providers such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud
  • Experience of data and application security
  • Experience with a programming language such as PHP, Go, Python, Javascript, etc

Successful candidates who meet the required standard will then be invited to a 90-minute panel interview held via video conference.

Working Arrangements & Further Information

The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity.

Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.

For nationally advertised roles: All successful candidates will be appointed to the nearest viable office nearest to their home postcode and on its respective pay scale.  This will be at either a HQ building (subject to desk allocation, a Justice Collaboration Centre (JCC) or a Justice Satellite Office (JSO) – See Map. All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity). 

For current MoJ employees, your base location will need to be changed to the nearest viable office (to your home postcode), either at a HQ building, JCC or JSO within the National Office Network and moved its location’s respective pay scale (any legacy arrangements/locations will need to be amended).

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.

MoJ candidates who are on a specialist grade, will be able to retain their grade on lateral transfer.

All candidates who are currently in receipt of Mark Time / Pay Protection should ensure they are familiar with the new policy on permanent and temporary promotion which can be found on the employee intranet.

Flexible working hours 

The Ministry of Justice offers a flexible working system in many offices. Standard full time working hours are 37 hours per week. MoJ welcomes part-time, flexible and job-sharing working patterns, where they meet the demands of the role and business needs. Annual Leave

Annual leave is 25 days on appointment and will increase to 30 days after five years’ service.
