Descriptions & requirements

Job description

Proud to serve. Proud to keep justice going.

We are offering an exciting opportunity to come and join us on a temporary placement to support our services over the summer period.

About us

HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is an agency of the Ministry of Justice and is responsible for the administration of criminal, civil and family Courts and Tribunals in England and Wales. Our roles support our Court users and colleagues within HMCTS, ensuring justice works for everyone.

Spread nationally over several sites, our ‘National Services’ which include Courts & Tribunals Service Centres (CTSCs) and National Business Centres (NBCs) are home to a large part of our workforce. We are working to reform the Justice system, and our National Services exist to support a modern, digital Justice system. These centres offer customer support and back-office teams which support the courts from around the UK.

Key Purpose

We are offering an exciting opportunity to come and join us on a temporary placement to support HMCTS over the summer period. We have several positions based within our National Services sites where you will be part of a team supporting the important work to ensure our services run smoothly.

Successful candidates will be assigned to teams to carry out a variety of general administrative and telephony duties to provide a consistent service that enables cases to move through to conclusion smoothly. As part of your role, you may be required to have regular verbal/written contact with members of the Judiciary, service users, mediators, management, and those within the legal profession.

Working as part of a flexible team, you will be expected to undertake a range of the responsibilities and functions specified. We will provide successful candidates with regular management support and ensure appropriate training is delivered.

Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Criteria

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Excellent customer service skills and communications skills.
  • Strong IT, administration, and organisational skills.
  • Flexible and adaptive to support business needs.
  • Proactive - resolve routine problems and escalate serious issues.
  • You must be eligible to work in the UK for the entire duration of the internship.

Applications from students in the final/penultimate year of under/post graduate study are particularly welcome, the experience will be beneficial towards your area of study and future career aspirations.

Ways of working

Successful candidates should be available to commence employment on 22nd June 2026 and be expected to work a minimum of 10 weeks of the 12-week contract. Annual leave provided will be calculated on a pro-rata basis.

As these placements provide business cover during peak leave periods, they will be office based only and are offered on a full-time basis of 37 hours per week (Monday to Friday).

Due to the short nature of the roles, these are not eligible for skilled worker sponsorship and candidates must have the appropriate right to work at the time of appointment.

Locations

Role availability varies by location, please see below for the full list.

You will be given the option to select up to 3 preferred locations for your placement. Once placements are confirmed no location changes can be accommodated. Please ensure you only select locations that you would be willing to commute to and work from for the whole duration of the placement. These roles do not support hybrid working. Whilst the post holder will be allocated to a specific office base, there may an occasional need to work at other local HMCTS offices.

We have other Summer Intern campaigns for HMCTS Regions across the country. If you apply for more than one Region, you will only be considered for one. If selected for appointment, the Recruitment Team will contact you to identify your preferred location to progress.  We are unable to transfer applications between regions or place candidates at sites not listed.

National Business Centre (NBC) Role Purpose:

Our administrative and telephony teams are the core of our NBCs, delivering great customer service to enable Justice. We work across a variety of jurisdictions and get the chance to shape and continuously improve the way we operate. Typical roles include data entry of paper and digital work, telephony, customer complaints and correspondence.

Courts & Tribunals Service Centre (CTSC) Role Purpose:

CTSCs provide hubs for telephony, assisted digital, case progression and hearing support. We provide an accessible and inclusive service to users, providing clear signposting and guidance to all users, coaching them in the use of the online platform. We provide information to resolve customer queries as well as process and update high-volume case details accurately and efficiently. These are predominately telephony-based roles, and you will need to be confident using IT.

A Merit List of applicants meeting the required selection criteria will be kept for up to 6 months. If you are subsequently offered a role from the reserve list for a location preference indicated in your application and decline it, you will be removed from the reserve list for the vacancy, across all locational preferences.

Pre-Employment Checks (Vetting)

Candidates who pass the application stage will need to complete pre-employment checks successfully before a provisional offer will be made. Expected start date is the 22nd June 2026. Due to the short-term nature of the role, if pre-employment checks exceed or are expected to exceed a reasonable timeframe (no later than the 1st June 2026), we will not be able to progress your application as we will be unable to accommodate a later start date.

Application:

To apply for this exciting developmental opportunity please read the job description and complete the online application form.

You are encouraged to follow the STAR framework when providing evidence. Further information on Success Profiles, STAR and the required standards for this post can be found at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/success-profiles

Personalisation in writing your application answers is crucial.

If a large number of applications are received the sift may be based on the Experience question only as the lead criteria. Your application will be progressed to a full sift should your application meet the required benchmark.

Additional Information

Working Arrangements & Further Information

The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity.

Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.

For nationally advertised role: all successful candidates will be appointed to the nearest viable office nearest to their home postcode and on its respective pay scale.  This will be at either a HQ building (subject to desk allocation, a Justice Collaboration Centre (JCC) or a Justice Satellite Office (JSO) – See Map. All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity).

For current MoJ employees, your base location will need to be changed to the nearest viable office (to your home postcode), either at a HQ building, JCC or JSO within the National Office Network and moved its location’s respective pay scale (any legacy arrangements/locations will need to be amended).

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.

MoJ candidates who are on a specialist grade, will be able to retain their grade on lateral transfer.

All candidates who are currently in receipt of Mark Time / Pay Protection should ensure they are familiar with the new policy on permanent and temporary promotion which can be found on the employee intranet.
