This position is available for external applicants as well as existing civil servants on level transfer or promotion. New recruits to the Civil Service joining MoJ are expected to join at the band minimum. For an exceptional applicant and under exceptional circumstances, managers have discretion to set starting salaries above the pay range minimum.

The User Centred Design Team:

The User-Centred Design team is being set up to take the next step in the redesign of services and their continuous improvement.

We focus on designing and measuring the end-to-end journey of a service across all channels putting the user at the centre of everything we do.

We are a small agile team of content and interaction designers, performance analysts, user researchers, developers, and accessibility advisors.

The User-Centric Design team consists of 4 teams: User Research, Customer Experience (CX), User Experience (UX) and Content Design.

The Role:

HMCTS is looking for an experienced Senior Interaction Designer to develop simple, clear digital services that help citizens and staff who interact with the Courts and Tribunals service.

You will determine the best way for users to interact with services, the overall flow and individual design elements. You will develop design concepts, create and iterate these designs working within agile teams. You will own the design process and be comfortable using evidence, data and research to back up your decisions.

You will mentor and train other designers, supporting the growth and development of the design team. You will help set direction and embed good practice within teams.

You will actively participate in cross-government design groups and activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identifying, developing and using best practice and standards to design services consistent with the rest of government and HMCTS
  • Supporting and mentoring designers, providing them with guidance, training and constructive feedback
  • Creating prototypes and concepts to communicate and test ideas with users and improving with evidence
  • Mapping user journeys and visualising design problems
  • Collaborating within a multi-disciplinary team on large, complex services by facilitating the design process and participating in research activities
  • Designing, planning and running workshops
  • Communicating design decisions to the team and stakeholders.
  • Advocating for users and understanding user needs to design simple, effective and accessible services

Other duties:

The post holder is required to work in a flexible way and undertake any other duties reasonably requested by line management which are commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility of this post.

Location of Post:

The successful candidate will be based in London. Regular travel to other HMCTS sites may also be required as part of these working arrangements. In line with the department’s policies, travel and substance and, where appropriate, overnight accommodation will be available in line with organisational policies.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Using your extensive knowledge of visual and interaction design to create usable, accessible and responsive user interfaces
  • Sketching, concept creation and designing prototypes at different levels of fidelity
  • Coding interactive prototypes using HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Ability to design digital and non-digital interactions as part of a broad end-to-end service
  • Understanding user needs, participating in research activities and interpreting user research to inform design
  • Ability to analyse the root cause of problems
  • Experience of delivering against tight timescales and demonstrating a proactive approach to managing risks as they emerge
  • Experience of running workshops, leading discussions and facilitating the design of the service through collaboration with other professions
  • Experience of championing a collaborative approach to the design process
  • Experience working in complex change environments
  • Experience with working in an agile environment and with development teams
  • Coaching and mentoring other designers, growing skills, and providing constructive feedback on work
  • Talking about, and advocating for user-centred design to various audiences and stakeholders, in a way that other people understand

Terms & Conditions:

Fixed Term Appointment

This appointment will be made on a fixed term basis, due to the time limited nature of the Reform Programme.

For existing civil servants, whilst the role itself is time limited, at the end of the fixed term period, you will retain your permanent status but will be placed on the re-deployment register. Successful appointment on promotion will secure this grade on a permanent substantive basis.

Secondments and loans will be considered on an individual basis.

Working Arrangements & Further Information

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on ‘modernised’ terms in their current post or onto ‘unmodernised’ MoJ terms if they are on ‘unmodernised’ terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.

Annual leave is 25 days on appointment and will increase to 30 days after five years’ service.
