Lead Data Engineer 

We’re looking for lead data engineers who will lead teams building tools, services, and pipelines to make data available to analysts and data scientists at the Ministry of Justice in a timely, consistent, auditable, and reproducible way. Your work might involve:

•    managing a small team of data engineers
•    acting as a subject matter expert within a domain or function
•    working with data users to understand and meet their needs
•    building robust and scalable automated data pipelines
•    using infrastructure as code to deploy AWS cloud infrastructure
•    developing tools and services that enable people to use our data effectively

About you

We welcome applications from anyone with relevant technical skills. For example, you may have a background in data engineering, software engineering, DevOps, analysis, or data science.

You’ll have extensive experience of:

•    Python and SQL
•    version control tools, such as git
•    translating complex data sources into useful and usable data sets
•    designing and building data pipelines
•    automated testing, for example with pytest
•    leading data projects and managing stakeholders
•    setting technical direction within a team and coaching others

It’s a bonus if you also have experience of:

•    Spark
•    Kubernetes and container-based workflows
•    continuous integration and deployment, such as GitHub Actions
•    cloud infrastructure, especially AWS, and infrastructure as code tools
•    orchestration systems, such as Airflow

You don’t need all of these – just tell us any experience you do have of them.

Location

You can be based at any of our offices. These are in Brighton, Cardiff, Ipswich, Leeds, Liverpool, London (Victoria or Canary Wharf), Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield, South Tyneside, Stafford, and Wolverhampton.

We’re open to flexible and hybrid working arrangements that include regular home working, but you’ll need to go to one of these offices from time to time. 

Recruitment process

You’ll need to apply online by sending us:

•    a cover letter, explaining why you’re the right person for the job and how you meet the criteria above – this should be no longer than 750 words

We’ll assess your application and get back to you in around two weeks to let you know if we’d like to invite you to an interview.

There will be one interview, which will include a technical test. The test will last one hour and will involve completing some scenario-based tasks using Python. You can see some example tests on GitHub.

The interview will be online, using Microsoft Teams, and will include questions about:

•    your technical skills
•    your experience of changing or improving your workplace culture or practices (Changing and Improving)
•    your experience of setting priorities, objectives, and timescales (Managing a Quality Service)

These questions are based on the Civil Service Success Profiles. You’ll need to meet the level 4 behaviours under the headings Changing and Improving and Managing a Quality Service.

We recommend that you use the STAR approach – situation, task, action, and result – when structuring your answers. Further information can be found on the National Careers Service website.

Interviews are likely to take place in late October/early November 2022. The highest scoring candidates who pass the interview will be offered a role. If you do well at the interview but we don’t offer you a role right now, we’ll keep your details for a year and let you know if other opportunities come up. The whole process can take up to a month.

Salary

The national salary range is £51,767 - £59,590, London salary range is £55,720 - £64,135. Your salary will be dependent on your base location

Working Arrangements & Further Information

The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.

For nationally advertised roles, the successful candidate(s) will be appointed to a MoJ office location, which may include their nearest Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office. This will be discussed and agreed on the completion of pre-employment checks.

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on ‘modernised’ terms in their current post or onto ‘unmodernised’ MoJ terms if they are on ‘unmodernised’ terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.

Annual Leave

Annual leave is 25 days on appointment and will increase to 30 days after five years’ service.

There is also a scheme to allow qualifying staff to buy or sell up to three days leave each year. Additional paid time off for public holidays and 1 privilege day. Leave for part-time and job share posts will be calculated on a pro-rata basis.
