BACKGROUND
The Northern Ireland Office supports the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in promoting the best interests of Northern Ireland. We make sure that Northern Ireland interests are represented within the UK Government and that UK government responsibilities are fully and effectively represented in Northern Ireland. We are the centre of expertise on Northern Ireland issues across Government.
The Northern Ireland Office employs around 170 staff, with offices in Belfast and London. As a small Department, we adopt a flexible project-based approach to ensure that we have the right people, with the right skills, in the right place to support the delivery of our key objectives.
Due to our structure and size, we are able to offer extensive exposure to Ministers and the opportunity to work on a far wider portfolio of policy and responsibilities than might be the case in a larger department. This creates an interesting and stimulating work environment.

ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Political Affairs Group works closely with Ministers to maintain political stability in Northern Ireland. We do this through our strong relationships with Northern Ireland’s political parties, the Executive, the Assembly and with communities and civic, voluntary and academic stakeholders, as well as with international partners.
The team supports the stability and peace brought about by the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement and its successors, with a primary aim of ensuring the devolved institutions can deliver for the people of Northern Ireland. The team also oversees the delivery of the Safeguarding the Union command paper, published in January 2024.
The jobholder will be expected to quickly develop a strong expertise on Northern Ireland politics and community issues, and the events, people and decisions that shape them. They will also play a key role in ensuring that the Northern Ireland Office and the whole of the UK Government maintains a strong understanding of Northern Ireland’s political events and their impact on UK Government policy and approach.
The role offers significant amounts of autonomy, and the post-holder should be comfortable with driving forward work and maintaining effective, responsive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The main responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:
Developing and delivering an engagement strategy as part of the Government's efforts to support political stability in Northern Ireland;
Co-ordinating the NIO Ministerial team's political activities in Northern Ireland, including the development of high quality briefing;
Representing the Government at key events and conferences in Northern Ireland;
Engaging with international partners on issues related to Northern Ireland; and
Monitoring and reporting on political events in Northern Ireland, including Assembly and Executive business, and using excellent political awareness and judgement to identify and communicate the wider implications of these on the NIO’s work.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
The post holder will need to demonstrate the following in their application and at interview:
Relationship skills and the capacity to quickly and autonomously build and maintain a network of internal and external stakeholders;
Policy development skills and the capacity to produce high quality briefings for senior leaders and Ministers across Government;
Ability to see the bigger picture and to weigh up the pros and cons of various factors to give robust and accurate advice to senior leaders;
Strong written and oral communication skills and an ability to present analysis effectively and persuasively to a range of audiences; and
An understanding of the political environment in Northern Ireland.

The NIO offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different NIO sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity.
