BACKGROUND
The Northern Ireland Office supports the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in promoting the best interests of Northern Ireland. We make sure that Northern Ireland interests are represented within the UK Government and that UK government responsibilities are fully and effectively represented in Northern Ireland. We are the centre of expertise on Northern Ireland issues across Government.
The Northern Ireland Office employs around 170 staff, with offices in Belfast and London. As a small Department, we adopt a flexible project-based approach to ensure that we have the right people, with the right skills, in the right place to support the delivery of our key objectives.
Due to our structure and size, we are able to offer extensive exposure to Ministers and the opportunity to work on a far wider portfolio of policy and responsibilities than might be the case in a larger department. This creates an interesting and stimulating work environment.
Our key priorities are set out in our Operational Delivery plan and include:
• Supporting greater inclusion, tolerance and openness in Northern Ireland
• Contributing to a safer Northern Ireland, where terrorist and paramilitary groups are less able to cause harm to communities
• Ensuring that governance in Northern Ireland is responsive, transparent and able to deliver effective public service.
• Addressing the legacy of the past in Northern Ireland

ABOUT THE ROLE:
Keeping people safe from Northern Ireland Related Terrorism (NIRT) is a top strategic priority for the UK Government. Within the Northern Ireland Office (NIO), this mission is led by the Security & Protection Group (SPG), which delivers through three core teams: Policy, Strategy, Operational Delivery; and Casework and Protection.
At SPG, we are passionate about delivering high-impact work that truly matters—fast-paced, complex, and deeply meaningful. Our team thrives on collaboration, expertise, and strong relationships. Every team member, regardless of grade or background, is encouraged to contribute, lead projects, and shape outcomes beyond their core responsibilities. This flexible, project-based way of working helps us stay agile, deliver results, and continuously add value.
We foster an inclusive, developmental culture where you will be empowered to grow, improve, and make a real impact. It’s a safe, supportive space where innovation is welcomed, challenge is encouraged, and personal growth is part of the journey.
In this pivotal role, you will contribute to some of the UK Government’s highest priorities: national security and public protection. You’ll work across a wide range of operational delivery, casework, and high-level briefings, all within a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
You’ll gain unique insight into the NIO’s role in firearms appeals and licensing, and help shape effective decisions. Strong analytical skills will be essential, as well as the ability to communicate complex information clearly and concisely. You may also work on the NIO’s Home Protection Scheme.
What You’ll Be Doing:
Building strong working relationships across security partners, stakeholders, and the wider Government.
Managing sensitive information with discretion and sound judgement.
Contributing to briefing Ministers and ensuring they’re equipped with the right information at the right time.
Identifying and mitigating risk—legal, security-related, and reputational.
Adapting quickly to new subjects and delivering under pressure with professionalism and integrity.
Who We’re Looking For:
A clear communicator—both in writing and in person—who’s confident in briefings and thrives in fast-moving environments.
A proactive, curious, and thoughtful problem solver with strong judgement and a keen eye for risk.
A team player who builds trusted relationships and adapts well to working in complex, political environments.
A detail-oriented individual who remains calm under pressure and can juggle competing tasks with agility and focus.
If you’re enthusiastic, self-motivated, and ready to take on a meaningful challenge with real-world impact, we’d love to hear from you.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The main responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:
Delivery of NIO’s statutory responsibilities for firearms appeals, and explosive precursor and prohibited weapons licencing
Project work to improve processes linked to own casework and wider team and group objectives
Developing and maintaining excellent working relationships and conducting regular engagement with security partners in Northern Ireland, the Devolved Administration, and Whitehall in order to deliver casework
Drafting submissions for senior officials and ministers, paying close attention to detail and accuracy
Own and deliver a portfolio of casework activity
Potential line management of staff at EO level
Possible involvement in NIO Duty Officer Cadre
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
The post holder will need to demonstrate the following in their application and at interview:
Excellent written and oral communications skills.
Ability to self-organise, prioritise and pay close attention to detail.
The ability to develop and maintain effective responsive relationships with colleagues and stakeholders, and to use your interpersonal skills to achieve results.
A willingness to undergo Security Check (SC) clearance (the appropriate level of security clearance must be achieved before commencing the full duties of the post).
DESIRABLE CRITERIA:
A good understanding of the political and security environment in Northern Ireland
Experience working on operational delivery/complex casework
Experience of briefing senior leaders on complex issues.
BEHAVIOURS:
We will assess you against the following Success Profiles behaviours at level 3 during the application sift and interview process:
Working Together (lead Behaviour)
Seeing the Big Picture
Managing a Quality Service
EXPERIENCE:
Please provide a CV and statement of suitability no longer than 500 words outlining how you meet the essential and desirable criteria. Both will be used in order to assess any demonstrable experience, career history and achievements that are relevant to the role.
Your statement of suitability needs to set out evidence of how your experience meets the requirements set out above. Your layout is entirely your preference; you may choose narrative, bullets, etc. One narrative example may cover the requirements needed. You don’t have to explain the whole process, just what you have done and the skills and experience you have used. Share with us what makes you suited to this role and why. What you can do, the skills you have that are transferable and the life experience or passion you have that are linked to this role.
If you don’t have work-based examples then give examples from school/college, clubs, volunteering or other activities you have been involved in.
Your work history will not be formally assessed so please put the main evidence of your skills into your personal statement. Your work history will be used to add context to your personal statement.
More information on behaviours and success profiles can be found here.
Please note that in the event of a large number of applications being received we may run the initial sift on the lead Behaviour “Working Together".
INTERVIEW:
You will be assessed against the same behaviours at the interview stage and will be asked to provide examples of how you have demonstrated the behaviours.
It may help to use one or more examples of a piece of work you have completed or a situation you have been in and use the WHO or STAR model to explain:
WHO- What it was? How you approached the work/situation? What the Outcomes were, what did you achieve? or
STAR- What was the Situation? What were the Tasks? What Action did you take? What were the Results of your actions?
Strengths
It is difficult to prepare for strength type questions. However, you can think through your answers, focus on your achievements and aspects you enjoy and decide how these can be applied in the organisation and role. While strengths questions are shorter and we do not expect a full STAR response, the panel is interested in your first reaction to the question and information or reasoning to support this.
If you do not have work-based examples then please give examples from school/college, clubs, volunteering or other activities you have been involved in.
All applications for employment are considered strictly on the basis of merit.
