The National Distribution Centre (NDC)
The Ministry of Justice Supply and Logistics area is made up of three core business areas and sits within Commercial.
Fleet Engineering Services (FES)
The provision of first line servicing for the National Distribution Centre (NDC) fleet of heavy and light commercial vehicles, the workshop also provides support to the wider MoJ fleet.
The team designs, develops and carries out vehicle conversions for HMPPS tactical units based on their requirements. They are also responsible for managing all vehicles as they enter and leave the fleet.
Before a vehicle is disposed of, the team carries out inspections and removes any sensitive equipment. They also inspect vehicles returned to Branston to decide if they can be reused instead of issuing a new one. If a vehicle can be reused, the team assesses its condition, identifies and costs any parts needed, and once agreed with the unit carries out repairs to ensure the vehicle is safe, roadworthy and meets legal standards.
National Distribution Centre (NDC)
Manages the collection, storage and delivery of goods. These include manufactured items, raw materials, prisoner property, mattresses, footwear, and a small amount of document storage. The site also supports other MoJ activities when needed. The warehouse is a modern 135,000 sq. ft. facility with high storage capacity. It can hold up to 16,500 pallets in both wide and narrow aisles, along with around 6,000 sq. ft. of office space.
The NDC operates its own fleet of 22 vehicles, providing around 500 scheduled deliveries each month. Deliveries are made across the prison estate nationwide, operating five days a week on a single shift, with overnight stays when required.
Transport Unit
Provides transport management services for the Ministry of Justice. It also manages a specialist vehicle workshop in Branston, supported by engineering and administrative staff. The unit’s main responsibilities include developing transport policies, providing technical advice, and managing both Crown Indemnity Insurance and commercial insurance requirements.
Role Summary
We are looking for an experienced and motivated Team Leader to support the Warehouse Manager in delivering an efficient and cost-effective warehousing and distribution service.
In this role, you will oversee the day-to-day movement of goods, including loading and unloading vehicles, checking deliveries, and ensuring stock is processed, recorded, and stored accurately within set timescales. You will also provide guidance and support to managers, team leaders and customers, helping to maintain a high-quality service.
You will bring recent experience leading or managing people. The role requires the ability to work to tight deadlines, solve problems quickly, and maintain strong attention to detail. While prior warehouse experience is beneficial, it is not essential. We welcome applications from candidates with a willingness to learn.
Working hours:
Monday to Thursday: 08:00 - 16:00
Friday: 08:00 - 15:30
This is an excellent opportunity to join the NDC warehouse team. Training can be provided to support the right candidate in developing their warehousing knowledge.

Typically, the key responsibilities in this role will include (but are not limited to):
Carry out all aspects of people management including performance management
Managing the team in goods in and out; ensuring records/trackers updated as required
Investigate Customer complaints / receipt / rejects / returns for the warehouse manager
Maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and risk assessments for the warehouse
Provide support to the warehouse manager for stock checks and inventory checking
Ensuring and managing property consolidation for HMPPS
Accident reporting and report hazards
Induction training for new team members and ensuring everyone is up to date/have the relevant training delivery of training, including upkeep and maintenance of training plans and training records
Understand and ensure policies, procedures and practices are in place as required
Manage the achievement of performance targets and standards within the work area, verifying and signing off documentation as appropriate
Support the Warehouse manager by analysing data from the department and other areas. Produce reports and provide accurate management information, to include monitoring goods performance
Act as first point of contact for relevant external stake holders
Health, Safety and Welfare
Support the Warehouse Manager in creating a safe working environment for staff, visitors, and contractors by adhering to Health and Safety legislation, ensuring Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) and Risk Assessments (RA) are followed, and by reporting any incidents to the Warehouse Manager/Health and Safety Manager.
Mechanical Handling Equipment (MHE)
The job holder will be manging a team who will be operating MHE on site, and will need ensure they are fully training, qualified and hold the relevant licences, and keep training up to date.
Essential Criteria
Team leader/Management/supervisory experience
Line manager experience. Experience leading teams (6-15+ staff), including delegation, coaching, performance feedback, and conflict resolution
Intermediate Microsoft Office skills - Outlook, Word, Excel
Warehouse management systems proficiency - training will be provided
Health & safety awareness & compliance
Coordinate teams, escalate issues, and liaise with other departments or clients
Desirable Criteria
First Aid, Fire Marshal, IOSH certifications - training will be provided if needed

The interviews will be held at National Distribution Centre, Burton Road, Branston. DE14 3EG. The site is shared with B&Q distribution, please follow the road signs for MoJ once entering the site and report to the security gate where you will be directed to the reception to sign in. The interviews will be held on an Industrial Site and all staff and visitors are required to wear Hi-Vis Vests whilst moving around site; these will be provided by security on arrival, please ask for a vest if not offered one.
