Overview of the job
This is a Group based role responsible for developing and providing assurance
against Group strategy and supporting the continuous development of safer custody
intelligence capability across the Group. It is a specialist role responsible for the
analysis of complex and diverse data sets from the prison group establishments.
This is a non-operational role with no line management responsibilities.
Summary
The post holder will be responsible for providing strategic and tactical safer custody
intelligence analysis and for supporting the operational safety of the Group.
The job holder will support the development of reporting data sets by providing
analytical support for management information and statistics in relation to safety
within PSP groups. They will develop and maintain data analysis tools to manage,
summarise and present data in an understandable and usable format to internal and
external stakeholders. They will ensure that this information is used by the Senior
Management Team to influence decision making relating to safer custody and
violence reduction.
The role will apply specialist analytical techniques to the maintenance and
development of management information and statistics. There will be a requirement
to produce high quality statistical analysis, both on a regular and an ad hoc basis.
Responsibilities,
The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities

? Provide accurate and in-depth data analysis to support decision making by
the prison group director in relation to the prison group establishments in
cooperating data links within safety including group security information
including substance misuse, external data in relation to knife crimes, gang
related violence etc.
? Provide support and guidance to establishment based Safer Custody
Analysts with regards to the thematic area through briefings, building
informal and formal relationships and effective communication. Will
support Safer Custody Analyst to identify reasons and causes of violence
and self-harm incidents and ensure information is documented, explored
and utilised.
? Will play a critical role in developing the safer custody intelligence picture
on a range of threats impacting on each establishment and the Group as a
whole, drawing on existing safer custody intelligence products as well as
developing their own analysis. The job holder will contribute towards the
development of establishment policy, procedures and practice and ensure
consistency of application.
? Will develop and maintain data analysis tools for use within the prison
group team. Responsible for monitoring and responding to all data requests
into the prison group within specified timescales.
? Responsible for designing, operating and updating a range of reporting
systems and databases, collating and supplying data for routine and ad hoc
management reports safeguarding the confidentiality, integrity and
availability of official data.
? Develop and evaluate information and intelligence gathered by the
establishment based Safer Custody Analysts to ensure effective use of data
and resources and provide a level of assurance to the Governor and the
Prison Group Director.

? Regularly attend establishment safer custody meetings and contribute to
information sharing providing advice and support to the committee.
? Responsible for the production of complex strategic reports including in-
depth research and statistical analysis, the drafting of narrative and
graphical representations in relation to management information.
? Regularly provide the Prison Group Director with a full overview of safer
custody intelligence analysis to support the Group assurance process. Will
undertake assurance process of local quality checks of ACCT documents, VR
paperwork, safer custody documentation etc.
? Produce reports and provide ad hoc contributions and briefing for Prison
Group Director and Group Safety Lead.
? Supporting non-analytical colleagues in use and interpretation of data.
? Deliver coaching and training around safer custody themes and issues
within establishments.

? The National Statistics protocols and procedures and understanding the
implications of the 2007 National Statistics Acts.
? Analysing complex information using a range of statistical techniques.
? Have a good grasp of intelligence and data analytical techniques, research
skills, information handling requirements.
? Developing systems to ensure data and analysis meet an appropriate level of
quality assurance.
? An understanding of a range of statistical packages, for example: SAS, Excel,
Access.

Minimum Eligibility
? All candidates are subject to security and identity checks prior to taking up post.
? All external candidates are subject to 6 months’ probation. Internal candidates are
subject to probation if they have not already served a probationary period within
HMPPS.
