What do we do?

There’s a huge variety of activity that goes on inside our prisons to help rehabilitate prisoners, both while they are in prison and after they are released.

Whether you join as a prison officer, caterer, operational support grade/ prison support role or professional focused on reducing reoffending, you’ll be doing interesting and meaningful work that has a genuine impact on people’s lives.

Bolatito Akinrolabu, Prison Officer

Tell us about your current role and what it entails?
As a prison officer, my work mainly focuses on supervising and rehabilitating prisoners. It’s rewarding to see the results from the little things we do. Just helping a prisoner make a phone call to their family can put a smile on someone’s face. I can come into work and just focus on my business-as-usual duties but seeing what I can do to help prisoners make a positive change means that I can change someone’s life and reduce re-offending.

Sometimes, because I come from the same background as some of these prisoners, I can understand how they’ve ended up on this path. I work with prisoners to help improve their behaviour. Making a positive impact to lives makes this job really fulfilling.

What is your background?
I was born in Nigeria but lived in South Africa and Sweden before coming to the UK in 2014 to do my Master’s degree in Business Managing and Marketing. I was studying part-time when I saw the prison officer recruitment campaign. I knew it would be a tough role but I like a challenge and did a lot of research into what would be involved. I joined the prison service just under 2 years ago and I haven’t looked back since.
